Has anyone ever had a CRANK-ARM snap in two?
I decided to take advantage of the mild weather today, and ride my bike home from work today (26 miles). When I was approximately 1/2 way home, the front derailleur's cable snapped, no big deal, as I dealt with worse before (or so I thought). Then with 5 or so miles left to go, the left side crank-arm literally snapped in half. Soooooo, I hoofed the rest of the way back home.
My question is, when I go to (try and) replace the crank-arm assembly, should I take a gamble with another aluminum set or look for a steel armed set. I never had this happen before, and I don't want it to EVER happen again, cause' I almost lost control in the middle of a busy intersection. It's on a Raleigh 26" frame, and it's Shimano brand. Press-fit on style, with 3 gears. the bike is about 15 years old, in otherwise great shape.
What's the best course of action?
Any tips or advise for this situation would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!
Yeah....it happens. Not nearly so much nowadays as it used to, however, because bike components have come a very long way in the last 10-15 years. I've snapped a left-side Kooka crankarm, and the right side of an old Sugino. Today's cranks are much better, though, and you shouldn't worry about using an aluminum crank.
It does help if you "spin" faster in a lower gear as opposed to "mashing" in a higher gear, but really most cranks will handle it. You're much more likely to snap a chain than a crankarm. Also, most cranks today use a spline-fit interface rather than the older square-taper press fit like your bike has......this helps alot. When you buy a new crank, you can find a square taper if you want, but I'd recommend a modern style. That does mean that you'll need to buy a new bottom bracket, too.
If you want to replace just the crankarm, you can do that. Look at http://www.aebike.com for some, and any bike shop can order one for you as well (you may not be able to match the style, but you can get them).
Sorry...bummer when that happens, and you're right, that sudden loss of control and balance on the bike is scary! Lucky for you that you didn't crash or slice open your leg. Keep that luck close to you!
