DOES YOUR SLEEPWEAR GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES ?
Studies show that most adults spend between seven to nine hours in bed, sleeping for an average of just over six hours. With age, sleep patterns change with the over 50s at greater risk of having more and more interrupted nights.
So, if we’re spending a third of our day in bed and trying to manage our changing sleep patterns, shouldn’t sleepwear be one of our most important items of clothing ?
Another feature of advancing years is changes to skin’s sensitivity. As the years advance, our skin changes, it becomes thinner, loses elasticity and has fewer nerve endings so we are more likely to suffer from bruising or skin damage as we get older. Many people also feel their skin feels more sensitive as they get older and they aren't able to wear certain fabrics.
This again begs the question… shouldn’t our choice of sleepwear take all these factors into account ?You would think that we should be spending more time thinking about our sleepwear which we'll be in for a third of our lives, and less time trawling the aisles for an evening outfit that may get a few hours' wear only.
There’s no doubt that fabric is a major contributor to the comfort rating of sleepwear.Pure 100% cotton has been proven to be the ideal fabric for pyjamas and nighties, because it is breathable, non-allergic and light.Cosy in winter and light in summer, natural cotton is preferable to man-made fibres such as polyester and nylon which are not as gentle on sensitive skins.
One person who has listened to the needs of mature women (and men ) is Liz Collins who recognised a growing need for comfortable, wearable, practical yet gorgeous sleepwear. She started Midsummernight's Dream, a business selling pure cotton nighties and pyjamas across Australia and the world, a decade ago.
Speaking from her retail outlet in Perth, WA, Liz said the secret was in the cotton, the cut and the manufacture. The fabric she uses is from India, and Liz maintains that the 100% cambric is unparalled anywhere in the world. The popularity of the nighties and pyjamas lies in their design - they are on the large side for ease of movement, and sewn with French seams so no itchy edges are exposed, and are all hand-embroidered using cotton lace !
Available in a vast range of French-inspired designs and fabrics from long-sleeved winter PJs, nightgowns and leisurewear to light-as-a-feather summer nighties with butterfly sleeves and shoestring straps, Midsummernightsdream sleepwear has something to suit everyone. New designs and fabrics are released twice a year.
“As people move into middle-age, they seem to have less tolerance for rough or itchy fabrics and so the Indian cotton is by far the best fabric for sleeping in.Our cotton sleepwear can also go into the washing machine, is quick-drying and won't need much ironing - if any - so it travels very well," she said.
Middle age brings many changes.Isn't it nice to find one that you can master.Taking a fresh look at pure cotton sleepwear may just turn nightmares into dreams !
