Gables ponders new tax on downtown businesses (Miami Herald)
Coral Gables commissioners voted 4-1 to give themselves the option to levy
another special tax on downtown businesses to pay for a beautification project
that would make Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue more pedestrian-friendly.
Commissioner Ralph Cabrera voted against the measure because of its lack of
transparency, he said at the meeting.
Representatives from the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and the city's
Business Improvement District were at the meeting and spoke in support of the
resolution. The BID already levies a special tax on downtown businesses.
The notice for the meeting was first published in the Daily Business Review on
Dec. 14, but because most people don't read the business paper, Cabrera said,
many involved parties weren't aware that the resolution would be discussed at
the meeting until five days before the meeting when the agenda became
available.
The resolution reads that special assessments can be collected annually as
early as November 2012.
Cabrera said City manager Patrick Salerno should have done more to inform
stakeholders that the item was coming up.
