The History Of Lazy Boy Sofas
Lazy Boy sofas have a long and rich history. Originally started in 1928 by two Americans from Michigan, it has grown into a huge and global company with the highest quality products. Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker were cousins who left their stable jobs in the 1920s to pursue their dreams.
The ‘Eds’ quit their jobs to invest in their own furniture business. Edward was the marketing guru white Edwin was the brilliant engineer and designer. Together they made a great team to build great products including Lazy Boy sofas. In the beginning, however, they were not making furniture but a variety of other products such as dolls and cabinets in Edward’s father’s garage. By the time the late 20s hit, the economy was roaring and the Eds had created their first furniture factory right there in Monroe, Michigan.
1929 was a year of innovation for Lazy Boy sofas as the Eds made their first reclining chair as well as their first upholstered chair. Despite the Great Depression of the 30s, they still made it out thriving because of their high quality recliners and chairs. During WWII in the 40s, the company converted to making parts and seats for planes instead of consumer couches. However, by the time the 50s rolled around they were back to success making consumer products and Lazy Boy sofas. In 1961, the company introduced the chair that boosted its sales from $1.1 million to $52 million by 1971 – the Reclina-Rocker. By 1972, the company went public. By the time the 90s rolled around, they were an iconic American brand with their ubiquitous raccoons being seen everywhere on TV commercials. And lastly, the company successfully adjusted to the internet age and so now Lazy Boy sofas include things like laptop modem hookups and compartments to keep your drinks cool!
