Are the hit monitors in Sports Authority really accurate?

In all of their readings; length, direction, swing speed, etc

Also, does having tape on the face of a club in any way affect the readings of the machine? I don't know if it would affect anything besides spin, and I would guess that if it's purely spin that's affected by the tape then it wouldn't have any effect on the results of the machine, but I could be wrong on either or both accounts.

Also, does hitting off of the turf mats that they have have any effect on anything?

Thanks.

I am not familiar with Sports Authority, but I assume they use the same monitors that Dick's and Golf Galaxy employ, a brand called Zelocity. They are not a bad monitor, but not that great. They give you decent information about clubs relative to each other, but I would NEVER spend big money on custom fit clubs based on a Zelocity monitor, combined with the poorly-trained fitters found at big-box stores.

The spin readings on the Zelocity are calculated, which introduces some error. The swing speed and ball speed numbers are very close. Distance and dispersion can be somewhat inaccurate. If you want to get relative information from the Zelocity, it is fine. For example, if you are contemplating the purchase of a new driver, take your old driver with you and compare numbers. If you see more than 3% increase in ball speed without getting a substantial increase in dispersion numbers, you have something.

Since the Zelocity spin rates are calculated, it is far trickier with irons, since spin is the essence of the iron game. If you can afford it, and one is available in your area, the Trackman is the very best launch monitor available and can give you information that not even hitting balls outdoors can tell you.

I have included a few sites for you to review. Cal Golf Tech has a decent introduction to club fitting and launch monitors (ignore all their hype about puring , they are trying to sell you that). The Trackman website and Brian Manzella forum (search for Trackman) give you outstanding insight into using launch monitor data to not only select clubs, but improve your swing.

With respect to the tape, if they use impact (thin) tape, it will not have a big impact on the driver or up to about 17 degrees for a metal or hybrid. However, once you get above 17 degrees, the loft now has a big impact on the spin number and by reducing the amount of spin, the ball will fly lower off the club, and since spin is calculated by the launch, you will get very inaccurate numbers. Tape is verboten on irons when using a monitor.

Finally, there is one other item you have not considered. Make sure you are hitting quality golf balls. If SA only has junk balls, bring a sleeve of your own balls and hit them.
